The 8 Best Places To Eat In Barbados – South Coast

189
Shares

The sprawling south coast of Barbados is packed with an amazing choice of places to eat. So many that it can be hard to decide where to dine. We’ve spent over 2 months exploring Barbados, with plenty of that time spent on the south coast. In this article, we’ve listed what we think are the best places to eat on the south coast of Barbados. These are all places we’ve visited and would recommend. Sadly, there might be some great places we’ve missed, but we can’t add them to the list if we haven’t been ourselves.

1. Blush Cafe – Best restaurant in Barbados for brunch & lunch

Blush Cafe in Barbados is a chic, artisan cafe offering delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch options as well as a variety of sweet treats. We originally visited for drinks while out walking along Coconut Beach, but we loved it so much we’ve visited every time we’ve been to Barbados.

If you’re looking for an Instagrammable cafe in Barbados, Blush Cafe is the place to be. We’ve had drinks and eaten here, and been impressed by both. There’s a quality selection drinks you don’t usually get on most Caribbean islands and their homade cakes and biscuits are divine!

We’d suggest visiting on a weekday if you can. It gets busy on weekends, and with no reservations, you’ll probably end up waiting for a table.

Overall, we loved Blush and rated it as one of the best places to eat in Barbados. Yes, it is a little pricey for breakfast/brunch, but you expect that from an artisan cafe. Coupled with the fact you’re in the Caribbean and everything is more expensive – it doesn’t work out too pricey.

2. Cafe Luna – Best restaurant in south Barbados for a romantic date night

Cafe Luna was our favourite date-night dinner spot. Offering fresh farm-to-table dining, this picturesque restaurant is above the beautiful Little Arches Boutique Hotel, overlooking Enterprise Beach and Oistins Bay. The decor of this place gives the vibes of Northern Africa, transporting you to Morocco, even though you’re sitting looking across the ocean at a beautiful Bajan sunset. As night falls, fairy lights and lanterns illuminate, creating the perfect romantic feel and making it the ideal place for a date night or special occasion with your partner.

Firstly, let’s talk about the incredible service. Our table was booked for 6 pm, so we could have the perfect spot to watch the sunset, and from the moment we arrived, we were greeted by smiling faces and helpful staff. We’ve never experienced such attentive service.

Within a few minutes of each course being delivered, we were asked if everything was ok, the water was frequently refilled, and we weren’t forgotten about once we’d finished – our table was cleared promptly. Additionally, we weren’t rushed to get the bill, and when we did ask for it, it arrived quickly – you’d be surprised how many people you see waiting around after they’ve asked for the bill in the Caribbean!

Let’s get on to the best part – the food!

The selection of starters and mains was mouth-watering, just reading them! It took a while for us to decide, but we were absolutely blown away by the food at Cafe Luna. The presentation was on point, and the flavours matched. To end the evening, we decided to share a dark chocolate cheesecake. While we were both contently full, we couldn’t resist.

Overall, Cafe Luna made for the perfect date night and definitely one of the best places to eat in Barbados – everything met our expectations and more. We’d 100% recommend Cafe Luna one of the top restaurants to visit in Barbados.

What we ate at Cafe Luna

LaurenJack
Starter: West-Indian shrimp pan-fried in panko breadcrumbs with chablis pepper beurre blanc and local breadnut pesto.

Main: fettuccine pasta with fresh fish or chicken or shrimp; capers, garlic, onions, fresh basil in luna tomato sauce or onions and oregano in a white wine parmesan cream sauce.

Dessert: dark chocolate cheesecake
Starter: fresh yellowfin tuna (rare) pan-seared with a peppercorn crust and sun-dried tomato basil walnut pesto.

Main: luna “Bajan” fish stew; fresh local fish, organic sweet potato and vegetables simmered in local pepper cream fish broth served with garlic herb parmesan bread.

Dessert: dark chocolate cheesecake

3. Just Grillin’ – Best casual Caribbean grill

Just Grillin’ has been around since 2021, and it’s easy to see why it’s remained a popular place to eat in Barbados for over 20 years. If you’re looking for a relaxing meal made up of grilled meats or fish, accompanied with classic Caribbean sides like macaroni pie, corn on the cob, rice and coleslaw, then Just Grillin’ is a good spot.

We’d spent a few nights eating things like sushi, Indian food and tapas, and decided we needed to get back to some easy, hearty Caribbean food, so we headed to Just Grillin’. The food was made fresh to order, and it was all incredibly tasty. Washed down with an ice-cold Banks, it was just what we needed.

It’s not the fanciest of settings, it’s basically in a car park, but once you’re inside, you won’t care.

4. MOJO Bar & The Chopping Board Kitchen – Best for burgers & live music

If you’re looking for a bit of home away from home – MOJO is a spot that reminds us of sitting out in a beer garden in the UK. This laid-back and atmospheric place is on the main road behind Worthing Beach.

There are a few options on the menu, such as wraps, sandwiches and pasta dishes, but you come here for the burgers, so that’s what we ate. We ordered the Famous Mojoan Burger and the Teriyaki Chili Burger. The portion sizes were great and incredibly filling, but the most important thing – the burgers tasted amazing. While we didn’t think the teriyaki tasted as you’d expect, it was delicious nonetheless.

To continue the sharing theme, we were a little full after devouring our burgers, so decided to share a dessert and the brownie was the perfect finish to a gut-busting meal.

Unfortunately, we managed to go to MOJO on one of the few nights they didn’t have any live music. However, after experiencing the vibe of this place we can imagine that it’s an amazing spot to be when the music is going. Sadly, we don’t feel like we got the real MOJO experience because of this, so we’d suggest checking their social media channels for which nights live music will be playing and booking for those days. Overall, if you’re looking for the best burger restaurants in Barbados, get down to MOJO.

What we ate at MOJO

We Shared Everything
Mains: The Famous Mojoan Burger (bacon, cheddar cheese, sautéed fresh mushrooms and onions) and Teriyaki Chilli Burger (teriyaki marinade glaze, caramelized onions, chutney, and seasoned with crushed chillies)

Dessert: chocolate brownie with ice cream.

5. Oistins Fish Fry – The place to be on a Friday

A person cooking on an open fire grill at Oistins Fish Fry barbados

No matter what, Oistins Fish Fry has to be on your list of places to eat in Barbados. Located in the fishing town of Oistins – right next to the fish market, is this beautiful Bajan tradition of Oistins Fish Fry. Here, you’ll find lots of vendors cooking fresh catch right in front of your eyes.

If you like hustle and bustle, an energetic atmosphere and fresh seafood, you can’t visit Barbados without coming to Oistins.

We ate at Uncle George’s Fish Net Grill, and we’d definitely go back here. Jack decided to have barracuda, while Lauren went with shrimp. The best part is they have a selection of 5+ sides, and you can have as many as you like included in the price of the meal! So, we had rice and beans, coleslaw, grilled potatoes, macaroni pie, salad, and pasta salad. It was all delicious, and you can taste the freshness of everything.

Remember, this is a venue full of street vendors. You’re going to get dinner served in a plastic tray with plastic cutlery, so dress casual, relax, and experience Oistins Fish Fry to its fullest.

We’ve been on a Friday, Saturday, and during the week, and you’ll get a different atmosphere every time. For the full experience and a party atmosphere, you have to go on a Friday, it’s the locals favourite night and it basically becomes on big street party.

We’ve written a full guide to Oistins Fish Fry, we’d recommend reading it before you go.

6. Naru – Beachfront Japanese and sushi on the boardwalk

Let’s start off with how we stumbled across Naru. We’d spent the day exploring and chilling at the beach – the sun went down, darkness fell, and we needed to find somewhere to eat – we tried 4 or 5 places, all with no luck. Walking up to Naru, we said this would be our last stop – if there are no tables, we’re giving up! Luckily, they had a table, and it worked out perfectly from there.

A bit like those impromptu nights out, this spontaneous meal wound up being incredible. We’d done no research, not looked at any reviews – like we usually do, and just went for it. It’s in an ideal spot on the boardwalk, and they have a few beachfront tables, but because we didn’t have a reservation, we were tucked away at the back.

Naru brands itself as Caribbean-pan-Asian cuisine, with a large selection of sushi and a concept menu to choose from – you’re definitely not short of choice.

From the moment we arrived, the service at Naru was perfect. When we’d finished, they called us a taxi, which arrived promptly. We had an enjoyable, spontaneous evening meal here and would highly recommend visiting. We think Naru is one of the best places to eat in Barbados if you’ve go sushi on your mind.

We Shared Everything
Mains: Rooster Maki Roll (Teriyaki Chicken, Avocado, Cream Cheese, Togarashi, Pickled Cucumber, Onion Puree, Friend in Panko), Jerk Vegetable Spring Rolls with Spicy Tamarind Dipping Sauce, Shrimp Fried Rice Chocolate

Dessert: Brownie Dessert In A Jar and Coconut & White Chocolate Creme Brulee

7. Apsara – Indian-Thai fusion

Update: Apsara closed its doors on St Lawrence Gap, but recently reopened as Apsara Express. Thankfully, one of the best places to eat in Barbados is now located at The Villages at Coverley, not far from Grantley Adams International Airport.

Strangely, this was the only meal we had on the famous St Lawrence Gap (if you read other articles, they suggest this is the place to be). We couldn’t wait to get to Apsara, and it’s safe to say we loved it!

Apsara is authentically decorated in an unbelievable location. It’s like they’ve picked up a restaurant from India and Thailand and dropped it on the waterfront in Barbados. The swinging seats, the lantern lighting, and references to both cultures really add to the experience.

We booked a waterfront table for 6:00 pm, with the hope of seeing a beautiful sunset falling into the ocean. However, the rain had other plans for us. As the waterfront seating isn’t covered, we were moved onto the covered patio area, which meant we got to sit on one of the swinging benches, so we weren’t all that disappointed.

We found the service at Apsara to be perfect. We arrived early – so early that they were still setting up the restaurant. They sat us in a cute little waiting area and fetched us drinks and menus, ensuring we were comfortable while we waited.

Overall, we loved Apsara, it’s definitely one of the best places to eat in Barbados. It satisfied our need for a tasty curry, the ambience was authentic and relaxing, and the service was amazing – it was the perfect date night.

LaurenJack
Starter: Poppadoms + Dips, Onion Pakora

Main: Zinga Korma (Shrimp)

Dessert: Bailey’s
Starter: Popadoms + Dips, Garlic & Peppercorn Squid

Main: Chicken Panang, Garlic Naan

Dessert: Chaitini

8. Cuzz’s Fish Stand – A legendary local institution in Barbados

While this isn’t a restaurant or bar you can sit and eat at, Cuzz’s Fish Stand is an island institution and one of the best places to eat in Barbados. Located in the car park of Pebbles Beach, Cuzz’s is famed for being the place to get the best fish cutters on the island. If you don’t know, a fish cutter is a Barbadian fish sandwich.

After reading all the recommendations and reviews, we went here with high hopes. This is the perfect spot to get a wallet-friendly lunch or a snack to keep you going throughout the day. You can choose a single or double fish cutter, where you’ll get whichever fish has been freshly caught (usually flying fish), which is then beautifully seasoned, grilled and served in a fresh fluffy bun. You can even add cheese or sometimes an egg if they’re not too busy.

For a street vendor to have started their journey over 70 years ago, and still be an island favourite, is saying something. We love the story of Cuzz’s. It was started by Cuzz Snr, but he passed away in 1998. At this point, his son David, Cuzz Jr, took over. Over 20 years later, he keeps his father’s and family’s legacy alive, serving one of the most famous dishes on the island.

For some of the other best places to get local food in Barbados, have a look at this guide.

🎒 There are many amazing things to do in Barbados that don’t involve these tasty restaurants, such as:

🤿 This caterman cruise that includes snorkeling with turtles and at shipwreck sights.
🙉 A 5-star island tour with stops to feed monkeys, swim with turtles, and much more!
🚲 Get off the beaten track and onto the trails and explore areas of Barbados most tourists don’t see on this 5-star e-bike tour.

You’re spoilt for choice with places to eat in Barbados

We hope this blog has helped you plan for a mix of both casual and more indulgent meal options for your trip.
