9 Hidden Gems in Puerto Rico You Should Visit

5.7K
Shares

From its stunning beaches and cascading waterfalls to a richly diverse culture and breathtaking mountainous terrains, Puerto Rico has it all. For an island that seems small, there is so much to discover, and even more when you go off the beaten path to uncover some of the incredible hidden gems in Puerto Rico.

We spent three and a half weeks road-tripping around Puerto Rico, starting in the history-rich capital city of San Juan, making our way to Fajardo on the east coast, before heading west to Cabo Rojo and Rincon. During this time, we discovered some beautiful hidden treasures. While we are confident there are so many more (and we cannot wait to find them one day), here are 9 unmissable ones to add to your list of things to do in Puerto Rico.

1. Ducot Trail, Cabo Rojo

Let’s start on Puerto Rico’s stunning southwest coast, in the town of Cabo Rojo, which attracts visitors from all over the world, who are looking to explore its 28 miles of coastline and dramatic landscapes.

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Cabo Rojo and one of our favourite hidden gems in Puerto Rico is the Ducot Trail. Although only a 5-minute drive from the main road, it’s rarely busy and remains an a bit ofd an undiscovered gem.

The trail is a short and peaceful walk, rather than a hike. The trail itself is picturesque, with palm trees and beautiful views of the sea and surrounding around.

At the start of the trail is a small beach with a few benches, where we sat to watch sunset, and it was spectacular. The water is incredibly calm and perfect for a relaxing and refreshing dip.

Top Tip: Head here late afternoon with a few drinks in a cooler, as this is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Puerto Rico.

🎒 On this 5-star full day excursion, you spend the whole day exploring the beautiful southwest and the Bioluminescent Bay: cruising through mountains, sightseeing, beaches, swimming, the Bioluminescent Bay and more. Pick up and drop off from San Juan is included.

2. Punta de Piedra (Point of Stone) Cabo Rojo Cliffs

Hidden gems in Puerto Rico Punta de Piedra translates to Point of Stone

A popular thing to do in Puerto Rico is to visit the Los Morriollos peninsula south of Cabo Rojo and home to Faro Los Morrillos, a historic lighthouse perched atop the 200-foot limestone cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Locals and visitors are attracted to this part of the island to witness the picturesque lighthouse and enjoy the well-known, beautiful white sand beach of Playa Sucia.

However, the real gem is Punta de Piedra, a natural rock formation suspended over the beautifully calm blue sea.

It takes 20-25 minutes to walk to the lighthouse and cliff edge from the parking area on the side of the road in front of a large gate. Historically, you could park and walk the track in 5-10 minutes. However, Puerto Rico is still recovering from hurricanes which have unfortunately made the road inaccessible by car.

To get to Punta de Piedra, one of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico, turn right at the lighthouse and follow the path through the grass along the cliff edge. Keep walking for a few minutes, and you will arrive at this breathtaking hidden gem.

🎒 Visit Punta de Piedra on this 5-star Cabo Rojo full day tour, as well as white sand beaches and Playa Sucia, the Faro Los Morrillos lighthouse, natural salt ponds and go swimming. Pick up and drop off is included.

3. Playa Colora and Playa Escondida, Fajardo

The Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, located on Puerto Rico’s east coast in Fajardo, boasts a few breathtakingly beautiful beaches, and a couple of them are definitely hidden gems.

The first of the three beaches here is Seven Seas Beach – a visually stunning beach that draws large crowds, particularly on weekends! However, the hidden gems are not far away. If you follow the marked trail behind Seven Seas, it leads to two of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico: Playa Colora and Playa Escondida.

Playa Colora

Afer about 10 minutes on the trail, Playa Colora is the first beach you’ll come to. It’s an untamed beach with vibrant orange sand and backed by majestic cliffs.

Often, swimming isn’t possible due to the strong current, but you can capture some breathtaking photos and appreciate the crashing waves before continuing your journey along the trail. Even if the water looks calm, be prepared for strong undercurrents. We’d suggest staying out the water.

Further along the trail, you will find the beautiful Playa Escondida, aptly named “Hidden Beach”. This secluded stretch of immaculate sand and crystal-clear waters makes for the perfect beach day in Puerto Rico. There are currents here too, but the water is shallow, so you can definitely have a paddle.

⛵️ While you’re in Fajardo, why not head out on a luxury sailing and snorkelling day charter? This tour includes a visit to Piñeros Island as well as several other stops throughout the day. You can choose to swim in the turquoise waters, snorkel in the abundant reefs, or just sunbathe on the white sand beaches. BBQ lunch, (alcohol and soft) drinks and snorkelling gear is included.

4. La Coca Falls, El Yunque National Forest

Hidden gems in Puerto Rico La Coca Falls El Yunque National Forest
Hidden gems in Puerto Rico La Coca Falls El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque National Forest is renowned for being home to some of Puerto Rico’s most breathtaking waterfalls, making it one of the best places to visit during your trip to the island.

While it may not initially seem like one of the hidden gems in Puerto Rico due to it being visible from the road upon entering the rainforest, there is a secret worth uncovering.

Once you park your vehicle on the opposite side of the road, on the left-hand side of the falls, you’ll notice a cluster of rocks. Climb these rocks and you’ll find a big rock to your right that puts you right in front of the waterfall cascading down a deep grey rock face.

Most people view the waterfall from the road, which is pretty, but it’s not quite like seeing it up close. It’s a small waterfall that does attract a small crowd, but climbing to the base of the falls feels a world away, even if it is only a few metres.

Top tip: If you visit El Yunque early in the morning, the warm glow of the morning sun beautifully illuminates the falls, making for some epic photos.

🎒 On this 5-star tour (with thousands of ratings), you get to visit several hidden waterfalls with cliff jumping and rope swings, a natural waterslide and explore El Yunque National Forest for great value for money. Taxes and fees are included.

5. Las Paylas Natural Water Slide and Waterfall

Hidden gems in Puerto Rico Las Paylas water slide and falls
Hidden gems in Puerto Rico Las Paylas water slide and falls
Hidden gems in Puerto Rico Las Paylas water slide and falls

Las Paylas natural water slide and waterfall is another of our hidden gems in Puerto Rico found in Fajardo. Firstly, it’s guaranteed to provide a fun-filled afternoon for everyone, no matter the age. Over the years, water erosion has formed a natural slide a swimming pool in the rock face.

To plummet down the natural water slide, climb up the rocks on the right-hand side (if you’re looking up at the waterfall) and stay as far right as possible to avoid slippy areas.

If descending the water slide isn’t for you, Las Paylas offers several natural swimming pools to relax and admire the beauty of the surrounding rainforest. If you venture downstream along the rocks, there is a stunning turquoise-tinted natural pool.

To get here, follow the directions to Las Paylas on Google Maps. Just before the pin, you’ll see car parking on the side of the road for a handful of cars. When we visited, it was $5 to park the car for the whole day (even though we weren’t staying long).

The trail to get down to the waterfall and slide is easy, well marked and takes 5-10 minutes.

🎒 If you’re in San Juan, this 6-8 hour tour takes you to Las Paylas waterslide, as well as Luquillo Beach (one of our favourite places in Puerto Rico), dining at Luquillo Kiosks, El Yunque National Forest, shopping and more. Pick up and drop off from San Juan and transportation is included.

6. Playa Negra, Vieques Island

Hidden gems in Puerto Rico Playa Negra black sand beach in Vieques
Hidden gems in Puerto Rico Playa Negra black sand beach in Vieques

Playa Negra, translating to Black Beach, is the only black sand beach in Puerto Rico and is located just off the east coast on the municipality island of Vieques.

While we’ve had the pleasure of visiting stunning black sand beaches in other destinations like St. Lucia and St. Vincent, Playa Negra boasts the darkest sand we’ve ever encountered.

The water can be slightly turbulent depending on the weather, but still suitable for taking a dip. It’s a rugged beach and there are no amenities, so you’ll have to bring everything with you, but we think it’s worth it to see the only black sand beach in Puerto Rico.

If you’re staying on mainland Puerto Rico, we definitely recommend taking a day trip to Vieques, particularly if you intend to spend time on Puerto Rico’s east coast as the ferry to Vieques departs from the small eastern town of Ceiba.

7. Playa Los Almendros, Rincon

Playa Los Almendros, Rincon one of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico
Playa Los Almendros, Rincon one of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico

On Puerto Rico’s west coast, we accidentally stumbled upon Playa los Almendros, a hidden, yet stunning beach in Rincon. We witnessed one of the best sunsets of our lives here and it’s for this reason this beach deserves a spot on our list of hidden gems in Puerto Rico.

There are plenty of beautiful beaches in and around Rincon, so many of them get quite busy. However, when we visited Playa Los Almendros, we were pleasantly surprised to find only a handful of other people, despite the beach being huge! Surprisingly, the water here is also incredibly calm, which is a happy contrast to the surfing waves of Rincon’s other beaches.

Although this spot isn’t secluded or hidden deep within the wilderness, it still holds the charm of a hidden gem and is a must-visit if you’re in Rincon.

8. Playa Pena Blanca (Wishing Wells Beach), Aguadilla

Playa Pena Blanca (Wishing Wells Beach), Aguadilla one of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico
Playa Pena Blanca (Wishing Wells Beach), Aguadilla one of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico

Playa Pena Blanca, also known as Wishing Wells Beach, is undoubtedly among the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico.

The reason we loved this beach so much is because it reminded us more of those picturesque coves you seen in Europe. It just felt completely different to any beaches we’d experienced in the Caribbean with the rugged rocks and cliffs, it’s just such a European summer vibe.

To get here, you’ll have to take a little walk from the road, and it is a scramble down some rocks, but it isn’t challenging. There is parking available on private land near the entrance, which was $5 when we visited. You’ll see some people parking on the road, but it’s not worth the risk, we heard of people receiving fines upward of $100.

🎒 Visit several more hidden gems in the area on this comprehensive full day tour of Puerto Rico’s west coast. Pick up and drop off is included as well as snacks and photos.

9. Sandy Beach, Rincon

Sandy Beach in Rincon one of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico
Sandy Beach in Rincon one of the best hidden gems in Puerto Rico

Among Puerto Rico’s many hidden gems, one that stands out is Sandy Beach in Rincon. This secluded, palm-fringed beach strikes the perfect balance between serene tranquillity and the invigorating energy of Rincon’s rugged waves. Rincon is well known for its exceptional surfing beaches, laid-back energy and incredible sunsets, and Sandy Beach is the epitome of all three.

Although there are bars, restaurants and houses around, it’s the towering palm trees that dominate the skyline, and give that paradise island vibe. Usually, you’ll see surfers out catching some waves, which is cool to watch from the safety of the sand. Or, if you’re a surfer, you can get out there too. We preferred to hide in the shade of the giant palms and watch form afar.

Top Tip: There are lots of incredible restaurants in Rincon that serve up local cuisine and international dishes, so be sure to check out one or two of them during your visit.

🎒 Visit Rincon and several more hidden gems on this full day tour of Puerto Rico’s west coast. Pick up and drop off is included as well as snacks and photos.

How to get around in Puerto Rico?

We recommend renting a car in Puerto Rico. It made our trip much more enjoyable as we weren’t relying on taxi drivers or tour buses, meaning we could plan our own schedule and tick off as many places as we wanted to.

If you’re especially interested in getting off the beaten path and exploring these hidden gems in Puerto Rico, then renting a car is a must because most drivers and excursions won’t visit these places.

To find the best car rentals in Puerto Rico we used DiscoverCars because you can easily compare prices and reviews of different companies. DiscoverCars usually have the best prices too.

What is the best area to visit in Puerto Rico?

For a Caribbean island, Puerto Rico is quite big. You’ll get completely different experiences no matter where you visit, but our top recommendation would be to do a bit of a road trip. We did three weeks in Puerto Rico and ticked off five different locations, each we enjoyed for different reasons.

We put together a guide on the best areas of Puerto Rico to stay and visit, so give that a read to learn more.

There is so much of Puerto Rico to discover

After visiting for Puerto Rico for three weeks, we feel like we only scratched the surface of what this incredible island has to offer. The people, the beaches, the rainforest, the food, the waterfalls – we loved everything about Puerto Rico and hope to return some day. We hope you enjoy your trip as much as we did, and to help you plan, we’ve written some more Puerto Rico guides based on our experiences.
