For many years, St Lucia has been ranked as one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world, and we can easily see why. Every year, couples and newlyweds head to this little island in the Caribbean for romantic getaways – it’s become a bit of a USP for St Lucia. So, as you can imagine, there are a lot of things to do in St Lucia for couples specifically.
During our 6 weeks on the island, we were quite surprised at the abundance of activities on offer. We were expecting an exclusive island with secluded luxury resorts and a lot of experiences focussed on intimacy and romance. And, while you will definitely find that, what impressed us most was the amount of adventure and exploration options too.
In this article, we’ll go through our favourite things to do for couples in St Lucia based on the activities we did, and can personally recommend.

Is St Lucia good for couples?
St Lucia is one of the most romantic destinations in the world with couples-focussed resorts and activities in abundance. Whether you’re a couple who like to get out and explore or you prefer to relax in ultimate luxury, St Lucia offers what you’re looking for.
1. Rent a Car
Without question, renting a car in St Lucia was the best thing we did. Yes, the island is small, but getting around isn’t easy. Public transport is unreliable and taxis are expensive, especially if you’re planning on venturing out of your accommodation most days.
We always use DiscoverCars to compare prices, but you can expect to pay between $50 – $80 per day. It is on the expensive side compared with other places in the world, but taxis will be more expensive, especially for longer journeys.
With your own vehicle, you have the freedom to go wherever you want whenever you want, your schedule can be flexible and you can see parts of St Lucia most tourists never visit. If you’re adventurers, like us, then you have to rent a car.

2. Discover Soufriere
Soufriere and the surrounding southwest corner of the island is the main reason most people choose to come to St Lucia. It’s where you’ll find the majestic pitons, the best waterfalls, lush greenery, natural thermal baths, the mud baths, cacao plantations and much more.
During our 6 week stay, we spent around 10 nights in Soufriere, and it was our favourite area of the island. Even when we moved up north we repeatedly made the long drive down to be back amongst the greenery.
This is definitely the most picturesque, relaxing and romantic part of the island, couples visiting St Lucia simply have to spend time here.

3. Chocolate-making workshops at cacao plantations
Did you know St Lucia is one of the few places on earth with a near-perfect cacao-growing environment? There are a few cocoa plantations on the island where you can learn about the chocolate-making process, including planting and harvesting, drying, and finally making chocolate.
We highly recommend the Tree to Bar Experience at Rabot Estate, Hotel Chocolat (instead of the Bean to Bar). They even have this amazing restaurant that’s included, they serve tasty dishes that all include cocoa! For example, we had a chicken roti wrapped in a chocolate-infused tortilla and white chocolate mashed potato (amongst other things).
This is definitely one of the best things to do for couples in St Lucia. You get to go into the rainforest, have a guided tour, enjoy incredible food, and make your own chocolate bars.
4. Bathe in the sulphur mud baths at the drive-in volcano
Branded as the only drive-in volcano in the world, the bubbling sulphur springs of the dormant Qualibou volcano are one of the most famous tourist stops on the island. However, for us, the volcano itself isn’t the highlight – the mud baths are!
Ok, they don’t smell great because they’re full of sulphur, but it’s an experience you’ll remember forever. With baths of varying temperatures and the opportunity to paint each other with mud, it’s so much fun and relaxing too. And, if you’re still not sold, it’ll take 10 years off you… apparently.
Top Tip: Wear dark-coloured swimwear or things you don’t mind throwing out – your clothes might get ruined in the sulphur baths.
We couldn’t get the smell of sulphur out of our swimwear!

5. Enjoy a Food and Rum Tour
We always find one of the best ways to get to know a new destination is to take a food tour. We first did this in Mexico, and try, and make it part of most trips now. Usually, you’ll be guided by a local and visit places only locals will go to, meaning you’ll get to try quintessential St Lucian food surrounded by actual St Lucians.

6. Chase waterfalls
St Lucia is home to some stunningly beautiful waterfalls, particularly in the southwest of the island. Some of these are busy tourist hotspots, like Toraille Waterfall. Others, like Anse La Raye and Dennery Falls, are secluded, and you’ll likely have them to yourselves.
We loved getting out and discovering some of these waterfalls, it’s such an adventure. Some require a little hike to get to, but as a reward for the hot and sweaty walk, you get to cool off in some refreshing fresh water.
If you love adventure, then Anse La Raye, Dennery Falls and LaTille Waterfall and Gardens are our preferred spots for a more secluded and romantic day.

7. Go horseback riding on the beach
Nothing screams romance like horseback riding along the beaches and rugged trails of St Lucia (well, unless you’re scared of horses that is).
While we didn’t do it ourselves, we did see a few people riding along Cas En Bas beach and the surrounding trails when we were hiking on the east coast. It looked like great fun, and you’ll get to see a less explored area of the island. There is little in the way of development in this part of the island, you’ll truly feel at one with nature.The untouched landscapes and crashing Atlantic waves smashing into giant cliff faces are something to behold. These horseback riding excursions might feel out of your comfort zone if you’ve never been on a horse before, but it’s worth it, and you’ll quickly get the hang of it (we’d never ridden a horse before going horseback riding in Cuba, and we loved it!).

8. Take a sunset cruise
Sunset is an incredibly romantic time of the day. There’s just something about watching that big orange circle dip below the horizon and then light the sky with yellow, orange, blue and purple hues. You’re going to see some incredible sunsets in St Lucia!
Taking in the sunset aboard a boat is a magical experience anywhere, but in St Lucia it’s extra special. If you ook out to sea, you’ll get watch the sun dip below the horizon, or when you look back towards land, you’ll get sensational views of St Lucia’s coastline during golden hour.
9. Get out on a hike
If you’re an adventurer and avid hiker, then hiking is a great couples activity in St Lucia. This mountainous island has some of the most incredible hiking trails with views and landscapes you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
You can choose to challenge yourself with hiking Gros or Petit Piton, or take a less strenuous hike by exploring the trails of the rugged east coast. But, whichever you opt for, you’ll enjoy some spectacular views. There are trails everywhere on this island, with varying difficulties, some of which you’ll need a guide for (particularly the Pitons).
Great hikes in St Lucia you should consider:
- Tet Paul Nature Trail (easy, short and gives amazing views of the Pitons)
- Gros Piton (the easier of the two Pitons)
- Petit Piton (very difficult)
- Anse La Raye Waterfall Hike

10. Relax at New Jerusalem Mineral Baths
New Jerusalem Mineral Baths is one of our favourite things to do in St Lucia. Tucked away in the rainforest just outside Soufriere, this place is a beautiful oasis of calm. Four mineral pools, each of varying temperatures, sit under a canopy of green, with beams of sunlight flickering through the leaves – it’s the definition of relaxation here.
There’s an unassuming entrance (you literally park at the side of the road and walk into someone’s backyard), then walk 10 minutes or so down a well-marked trail and across a picturesque bridge before making it to New Jerusalem Mineral Baths. When we visited, there were 4 other people here (two couples) – much better than the often crowded Diamond Falls.
You could spend hours here. We suggest bringing some drinks and food because you really are out in the middle of nowhere, so if you want to spend some hours here, you’ll need refreshments. We rank it as one of the top things we did and definitely one of the best things to do in St Lucia for couples.
11. Enjoy a romantic picnic on the beach
If you were asked to list 5 romantic date ideas, a picnic would probably make this list, so why not combine the most romantic island in the Caribbean with a romantic date? We found this cute excursion, which looks perfect for an intimate afternoon and evening.
Your area will be beautifully set with blankets and cushions, places set for food, and you’ll be served a tasty picnic and drinks right on the beach, where you can also watch the sunset.

12. See St Lucia from the sky
For a completely different perspective of the landscapes of St Lucia, you can join a helicopter tour. If you think the island is beautiful from land, your jaw will drop when you see it from the air.
If your hotel is in the north of the island, a lot of people choose a helicopter transfer to get to their accommodation because transfer by road can take a while (2 hours+ in some cases), so if you don’t have time for a tour, this is another option to see St Lucia from the sky.
If you choose the west coast route, which we suggest you do, you’ll get an incredible view of Marigot Bay, the Pitons, the rainforest, Soufriere Volcano and more.
13. Take a personalised island tour
Honestly, there is so much to do in St Lucia it can be overwhelming what to choose. So, if you’ve managed to whittle it down to your top choices, a great way to see them is with a personalised and private island tour. Local drivers are knowledgeable about the island and know the best places to stop for views, food and drinks – and they’ll probably take you to some spots you’ve never heard of.
Personally, we usually rent a car, but that’s because we have experience driving on islands like St Lucia. If you’re not a confident driver but still want to get off the beaten path, then a personalised island tour is the best way to do it.

14. Spend the day at Marigot Bay
Marigot Bay is one of the most picturesque towns, beaches and bays we’ve seen in the Caribbean.
On the west coast of St Lucia, this beautiful area sits inside a natural harbour that is protected by steep hills, creating natural protection and a harbour wall. Here, you’ll find a marina with a few bars and restaurants on the water. But to see the star of the show you’ll have to hop on a 1-minute boat ride for a visit to the beach at Marigot Beach Club. If you’re up for some relaxation, you can spend the day here as they offer an all-inclusive day pass.
You could probably miss the day pass. To be honest, the hotel doesn’t have the greatest reviews, but the surroundings are sensational. We were only able to spend a short amount of time here, but could have sat for hours.

15. Take a speed boat tour or sailing excursion
We’ve mentioned that the roads in St Lucia aren’t exactly the most enjoyable, so you can avoid them completely by hopping aboard a boat. A speed boat or sailing excursion is a great thing to do, especially on the west coast. You’ll be able to stop at some of the best beaches, bars, restaurants and fishing villages.
Some beaches in St Lucia aren’t easy to get to from land. They involve short hikes and drives down very bumpy tracks, but a boat is ideal for a beach-hopping day because it’s so easy to go from one beach to the next. Also, these excursions suit all budgets. You can book a private boat for something more intimate or hop aboard a charter with other guests to save some cash.
Many of these excursions also include snorkelling and time on land too, like visiting a waterfall or the sulphur mud baths.
16. Visit Diamond Falls Mineral Baths and Botanical Gardens
When searching for things to do in St Lucia, you probably stumbled across Diamond Falls and Botanical Gardens. This place is a hotspot for tourists and cruise ship passengers in search of the beautiful rainbow-coloured waterfall, lush gardens full of exotic flowers and a rejuvenating dip in the mineral baths.
It can get very busy here, we attempted to visit just after opening and there were already bus loads of people arriving. We opted to return later in the day, about 2 hours before closing and it was almost empty.
For a more romantic and intimate experience wandering the botanical gardens and relaxing in the mineral baths, we’d suggest trying to avoid peak hours. Alternatively, just head to New Jerusalem Mineral Baths.

17. Explore the Best Beaches in St Lucia
St Lucia is home to some spectacular beaches, but what makes it extra special is the diversity among them. In a day of beach hopping, you can see white, golden, dark and black sand beaches. 18. Learn how to cook like a St Lucian at a cooking class
St Lucian Creole cuisine is a mixture of Carib, African, Southeast Asian and European cultures, making for some unique and seriously delicious flavours.
If you want to take a slice of St Lucia home with you, we can highly recommend a local cooking class as one of the best things to do in St Lucia for couples. When you’re back home and want to transport yourself back to this island paradise, you’ll be able to whip up one of the local dishes you learned to prepare.
Even if cooking isn’t usually your idea of fun, cooking classes are usually interactive and hands-on. Jack hates cooking, but loves a cooking class!

19. Go whale and dolphin watching
If you’re visiting St Lucia between late November to February/early March, then you should take your chances with a whale and dolphin watching tour. There is a chance you’ll see dolphins year-round, but whale sightings are much more likely during this period because sperm whales are migrating.
There are plenty of excursions available for this kind of thing, but please do your research beforehand to make sure the company you’re using is ethical. Also, never believe someone who tells you there is a 100% chance of seeing whales and/or dolphins… nobody can control nature like that.

20. Relax with a couples massage
If your hotel or resort has a spa, we recommend taking advantage of their services. Or, if they’re not well-reviewed then have a search for somewhere that is. You could opt for a relaxing massage on the beach (a lot of people recommend Spencer who is based on Reduit Beach), alternatively, you could head to Viceroy Resort at Sugar Beach and get a rainforest massage.
There are plenty of resorts and spas to choose from (if yours doesn’t offer spa services).
