Is Vinales Cuba Worth It?

Yes, Vinales in Cuba is definitely worth visiting! What sets Vinales apart from other destinations in Cuba is the unmatched, unique landscape of the Vinales Valley, with its iconic limestone hills known as ‘mogotes’. These rare geological formations are found in only a few places worldwide, and they tower over a landscape that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Today, local farmers use traditional methods to cultivate tobacco on the land, and this tobacco is central to Cuba’s reputation for producing some of the best cigars globally.

9. Admire Views from Hotel Los Jazmines

Hotel Los Jazmines is a bright pink hotel on a hill with arguably some of the best views over the Vinales Valley in Cuba. And you can even stay at Hotel Los Jazmines, if you want to enjoy these views for your entire visit.

It’s only 17 minutes into the Vinales hop-on-hop-off bus loop, so many people get off here first. The bus stops for about 5-10 minutes if you just want to grab a quick photo over the Vinales Valley. However, it’s worth staying longer if the weather is good. This gives you time to relax, grab a drink and enjoy the view. The next bus will come around in 1.5 hours.

When we were there, the hotel was closed for renovations, but there’s another bar, Mirador Los Jazmines, just back from the view, that’s well-recommended. Here, there’s also a lady selling postcards, and she posts them for you! So, if you’re looking to send home a souvenir to friends and family, this is one of the most unique things to do in Vinales during your trip.

Next to Hotel Los Jazmines, El Restaurante-Mirador “Balcón del Valle” is a well-rated restaurant renowned for its delicious dishes and amazing views of the Valley. And it’s also one of the best places to watch the sunset in Vinales.

The cuisine served here is local Cuban cuisine. It’s a great place to try Ropa Vieja, Cuba’s national dish, which is slow-cooked tender shredded beef in an amazingly flavourful sauce!

11. Take a Photo at Mural de la Prehistoria

The Mural de la Prehistoria is a large mural painted on a rock wall in the Vinales Valley. Also, it is stop 11 on the Vinales Valley hop-on-hop-off bus tour.

The Mural is about 120 meters high and 160 meters wide, making it hard to miss! Designed by the artist Leovigildo González Morillo in the 1960s, it showcases colourful depictions of the evolution of life, from dinosaurs to human figures.

The mural draws mixed reviews – some appreciate the art and the concept, while others find it a bit out of place. But, it’s surrounded by lush vegetation and offers another perspective of the best things to do in Vinales and its attractions.

The entrance fee is 3 CUC (drink included) to view the mural up close, and the area around it has a few amenities like a restaurant and some souvenir shops.

You’ll come across vendors selling handmade crafts and treats along the streets, as well as several small shops, restaurants, and bars. Try some local dishes or enjoy a mojito!

In the day, Vinales town might look super quiet and low-key, but at night it comes to life with music and dancing! Restaurants are lit up and overflowing with tourists and locals. It really surprised us, considering Vinales is an off-the-beaten-track small, local town in rural Cuba.
