Things to Do in Sigiriya (2025): What We Loved & What to Skip

82
Shares

We added Sigiriya to our 2025 Sri Lanka itinerary for one main reason – that dramatic and ginormous Lion Rock you see in every photo. But when we got there, it quickly became clear there are many more things to do in Sigiriya than just the fortress.

Set in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya is surrounded by jungle, farmland and ancient ruins. We noticed there’s still a really quiet, rural feel to the village, despite the growing number of guesthouses and cafes. It might be touristy by Sri Lankan standards, but it hasn’t lost its charm at all.

Most people just climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress and leave, but we ended up staying two nights and still didn’t get to everything. Between sunrise hikes, elephant safaris and exploring nearby places like Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya makes a great base for this part of the country. If you’re planning your trip and wondering what to do in Sigiriya, here’s everything we loved, plus what we’d skip next time.

Why We Chose Sigiriya

We first heard about Sigiriya the way a lot of people probably do – through photos and reels of Lion Rock and sunrise views from Pidurangala on social media. After seeing it pop up again and again, we knew it had to be on our Sri Lanka travel itinerary.

Aside from looking absolutely incredible, it also fit perfectly into our clockwise route around the island. We were heading from Negombo into the Cultural Triangle, then down through Kandy, the Hill Country and the South Coast – and Sigiriya slotted right into that loop.

This part of the country really surprised us. We expected Lion Rock to be the big highlight, and it was, but there’s way more to do in Sigiriya than we’d imagined, which is why we wrote this Sigiriya travel blog in the first place. If you’re wondering whether Sigiriya is worth going to, our answer is 100% yes.

What Are the Best Things to Do in Sigiriya?

1. Climb Sigiriya Rock (Lion Rock)

A trip to Sigiriya wouldn’t be complete without climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as Lion Rock. This towering 200-meter-high ancient citadel is one of the most iconic landmarks in Sri Lanka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a top highlight of the Cultural Triangle.

Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, the fortress was both a palace and a defensive military stronghold and the elaborate gardens, moats and frescoes are still visible today.

There are 1200 steps to reach the top of Lion Rock, and on the way you’ll pass ancient wall paintings (the Sigiriya Frescoes) and the Mirror Wall, which was once polished so perfectly that the king could see his reflection. We noticed that it’s now covered in ancient graffiti, from people who visited as early as the 8th century. If you visit as part of a walking tour of Lion Rock, you’ll get a much deeper insight to the history and art at this special place.

Halfway up, you’ll reach the Lion’s Paws, which was the original entrance and was once shaped like a full lion carved into the rock! Sadly, only the paws remain but they’re still seriously impressive and give you a sense of the magnificence that once stood here.

a woman standing on top of lion rock fortress sigiriya overlooking sigiriya farmland and mountains in the distance

Is Sigiriya difficult to climb?

It’s not an easy hike, especially in the heat, but it’s very doable if you take your time. The climb itself took us around 30 minutes, with a couple of quick water stops. Unsurprisingly, it can be pretty busy because it’s one of the most popular things to do in Sigiriya.

But, honestly, the view at the top is breathtaking with endless jungle, mountains, lakes and farmland. So if the climb is worrying you, we promise the reward is worth it. We hiked up in the late afternoon and catching golden-hour light from the summit was one of the best moments of our trip to Sri Lanka.

Best time of day to climb Sigiriya Rock?

Our best tip for visiting Lion Rock is to go after 3:30pm when the crowds thin out and the sun starts dipping. If you time it right, sunset here is super magical, but make sure you allow time to descend before it gets dark.

a woman walking on a path towards the large sigiriya rock in the background one of the fun things to do in sigiriya
lion paws at sigiriya rock entrance and people climbing stairs to up against large rock among the fun things to do in sigiriya

How much does it cost to climb Sigiriya Rock?

Entrance cost for Lion Rock as a foreigner is $35 USD per adult (as of 2025), making it one of the most expensive tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. If that feels steep, skip to Pidurangala Rock or Mapagala Fortress (number 2 and 4 on our list) for a cheaper view of Lion Rock itself. But we think it is worth stretching your budget if you can.

2. Hike Pidurangala Rock for Sunrise (Best View of Sigiriya Rock)

If you want the best view of Sigiriya Rock, without the hefty entry fee, head to Pidurangala Rock. Just a few minutes from Lion Rock, this cheaper alternative gives you one of the most stunning sunrise views in Sri Lanka. And with that, means you need to be prepared for the trail to be busy and to wait in line at some points.

We went to the top of Pidurangala Rock twice for sunrise during our 3 months in Sri Lanka and can confirm it is a sensational sunrise spot. The light hits Sigiriya Rock perfectly at sunrise, glowing gold above a sea of mist and jungle. It’s genuinely magical and well worth the early wake up.

💡 Top tip: You pass by a small temple at the base so wearing something to cover shoulders and knees is recommended, but we didn’t see this being enforced at all.

How long does it take to climb Pidurangala Rock?

The hike takes around 30–40 minutes with the last 5 minutes involving a bit of scrambling over boulders. Don’t worry if you’re not super fit – it’s doable with a bit of patience and help from other climbers. Just take your time, wear trainers and be careful on the boulders (especially if it rained recently).

It can get busy on the trail up, especially around 5-6am, but the top is a huge open space so it rarely feels overcrowded once you’re up there. And, after the sunrise, most people head down (which we couldn’t understand as it continues to get more beautiful watching the mist clear over the jungle!). We stuck around for an hour or so after sunrise, most of the crowds dispersed and we ended up with the place almost to ourselves (well, if you don’t count the monkeys 🐒).

What’s the entrance fee for Pidurangala Rock?

The entrance cost for Pidurangala Rock is 1000 LKR (around $3.50 USD). It’s a lot cheaper than Lion Rock equally as amazing for views.

3. Learn about Sri Lankan Food at Ramya’s Home Cooking

One of our most memorable times in Sigiriya was spending an evening at Ramya’s Home Cooking. This isn’t a formal cooking class, it’s more of a warm, Sri Lankan food experience that’s set in a family home just outside the centre of Sigiriya.

You’ll sit in her open-air kitchen as Ramya prepares around 10 traditional Sri Lankan dishes right in front of you (from scratch!), talking through everything as she cooks. She explains how she builds flavour with ingredients like curry leaves, coconut, mustard seeds and home ground spice mixes.

What makes this one of the best things to do in Sigiriya is that it’s completely non-touristy. Her mum often helps with prep and her young kids usually float in and out of the room, making it feel homely and a super personal experience. We sat and watched Ramya cook, asked questions and got to know her and what life in Sri Lanka is like, as all of the dishes came together. Once everything was ready, we then all sat down to eat buffet-style (there was absolutely loads!).

This is also a great way to meet other people who are travelling Sri Lanka, without feeling forced into it. However, don’t think you’re going out for a quick meal, you’ll be here for 2 hours at least.

👩‍🍳 If you prefer to do a hands-in-the-pot cooking class and have a more immersive experience, we think you should skip this and do this 5 star cooking class instead (we know we would’ve loved to do this!).

How much does Ramya’s Home Cooking cost?

Dinner at Ramya’s is a set cost of 2500 LKR (about $8 USD) per person (you get absolutely loads!).

You can book via WhatsApp (+94 78 820 1389) or your accommodation. Most places in Sigiriya know Ramya personally and will help you arrange it.

4. Watch an Epic Sunset from Mapagala Fortress

We understand if you’re put off by the cost of Lion Rock (it’s a lot!). But, don’t worry, you’ll absolutely love Mapagala Fortress because it’s free, gives some incredible views of Lion Rock and the surrounding area, and is a quieter place to watch the sun go down – Mapagala Fortress is definitely one of the best hidden gems in Sigiriya.

Incredibly, we didn’t realise this was a fortress (until we saw the name). It might even predate Lion Rock and was probably part of the original defensive network before Kashyapa built his palace in the sky.

There’s not much signage or ticket booth here, which is kind of the appeal and why we think it’s a must if you’re looking for what to do in Sigiriya. It feels raw and untouched and despite the name, there isn’t much left of the ancient fortress itself.

We came here twice during our time in Sigiriya and both sunsets were incredible. Even with 30 or so people around, it felt peaceful. There’s a lot of space to spread out and it was amazing to just watch as the sun went down in the distance.

a group of people sitting on top of rock sunset at mapagala fortress one of the things to do in sigiriya

How do you get to Mapagala Fortress?

The entrance is just opposite the Lion Rock car park and it only takes 10–15 minutes to walk up from the roadside – just ask a local or check Google Maps for ‘Mapagala’.

5. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple from Sigiriya

One of the best things to do near Sigiriya is to take a half-day trip to Dambulla, just 30 minutes away by tuk-tuk or car. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most impressive temple complexes in Sri Lanka.

The main reason to visit is the Dambulla Cave Temple and we were genuinely blown away by how well-preserved it is. The cave temple is built into the side of a massive rock and has been a place of worship for over 2000 years. Inside, we saw five ancient caves filled with over 150 Buddha statues, ceiling-to-floor murals and intricate carvings that cover every inch of the cave walls.

Once you’ve visited the cave temple, walk straight out of the entrance and down the steps (not the same steps you came up). After a few hundred steps, you’ll reach the huge Golden Buddha statue, which we actually found it more striking than the temple itself.

Our best tip for visiting Dambulla from Sigiriya is to go the morning before it gets too hot as there are quite a lot of stairs to get up to the caves.

🎒 Visit the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, viewpoints, lakes and Sigiriya Rock Fortress on this private day tour by tuk-tuk or car, with pick-up and drop-off included.

How much does Dambulla Cave Temple cost?

It costs 2000 LKR per person and as it’s still an active religious site, you’ll need to cover your shoulders and knees. We wore trousers, but you can rent sarongs there too.

💡 Heads up from our experience: The entrance situation is extremely confusing. We made the mistake of entering from the Golden Buddha side, which looks like the main entrance, only to be told we had to exit and walk 10 minutes up the road to the actual ticket office. So we recommend you go as part of a tour like this one to be honest, so that you go straight to the Dambulla Cave Temple ticket office entrance (not the Golden Temple) and avoid backtracking in the heat.

6. Visit a Hidden Temple Near Dambulla With Lake Views

If you’re already in Dambulla visiting the cave temple, you might as well squeeze one of our best secret spots in, that turned out to be one of our favourite things to do in the Sigiriya area.

The temple is called Sankassapura Senasanaya Anakatawa and it’s a small, peaceful hilltop complex with panoramic views over a lake. We actually stumbled across it while scrolling Google Maps and at the time of writing (July 2025), it still has fewer than 100 reviews – which says a lot about how off the beaten track it is.

There’s a huge meditating Buddha statue and a stupa you can go inside, which is beautifully painted and feels newly built. We didn’t see a single other person here, it was one of the calmest, most peaceful places near Dambulla we found.

💡 Top Tip: It only costs 500 LKR each and that includes a bottle of water, which we thought was a nice touch. The climb up is short, maybe 5 minutes and it’s all well-maintained stairs.

7. Explore the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa (Day trip from Sigiriya)

Just an hour’s drive away (making for the perfect cultural day trip from Sigiriya like we did) is the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. If you’re into seeing ancient ruins, archaeology or just want to get out and explore somewhere new, it’s absolutely worth the effort.

This place was Sri Lanka’s capital during the 11th to 13th centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with incredibly well-preserved ruins. When you visit, you get a real feel of the scale of this ancient civilisation and how people might have lived here.

We spent a full day exploring here and still didn’t see it all – the site covers over 200 acres (2.5 km squared), which doesn’t sound a lot but in the heat it’s not exactly fun to walk around. Most people rent bikes, hire a driver or go on an organised day trip to get around, which we did and it made things much easier.

Entry isn’t cheap by Sri Lankan standards (annoyingly) at $30 USD per person. But, your ticket includes all the main ruins and entry to the museum, which we definitely recommend wandering around first as it gives a bit of background to what you’re seeing without being overwhelming.

  • Tip #1 for Polonnaruwa: Book a tour with pick-up and drop-off included so you don’t have any stress.
  • Our tip #2: Bring socks because you have to remove your shoes at the temples and some of the stone floors are unbearably hot!

8. Go on an Elephant Safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park

If you’re in Sigiriya between July and October, please don’t miss the chance to witness The Gathering, one of the largest wild elephant migrations in Asia! It’s hands down the best time to see elephants in Sigiriya and one of the top things to do. During this time, hundreds of elephants make their way to the reservoirs in Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks and seeing them roam freely is one of the most moving experiences you’ll have in Sri Lanka.

If you’re visiting outside of July to October, you might want to head to Yala for leopards or Udawalawe for elephants. We’ve done both, but we preferred Udawalawe as it was quieter and we saw a lot more wildlife.

Safaris typically run at sunrise or late afternoon when the wildlife is most active. Both Minneriya and Kaudulla are great options for a half-day safari near Sigiriya. You’ll ride in a 4×4 jeep with a guide, and while elephants are the main attraction, you might also spot monkeys, crocodiles, eagles and – if you’re seriously lucky – even a leopard!

🐘 Book this top rated Minneriya National Park safari from Sigiriya with hotel pickup and a local driver. It’s perfect if you want the best chance of seeing big herds.
🐘 This Kaudulla National Park safari from Sigiriya is a better option if you’re hoping for a quieter experience with fewer jeeps around.

9. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Sigiriya at Sunrise

One of the most unforgettable things to do in Sigiriya is to float above it all in a hot air balloon. Most take off around dawn from nearby Kandalama, giving you a bird’s eye view of the Cultural Triangle – misty jungle, ancient ruins, lakes, rice fields and of course, Lion Rock glowing in the early morning light.

The balloon ride lasts about an hour (weather dependent) and usually ends with a soft landing somewhere rural – we’ve heard of landings in rice paddies or a village cricket pitch. It’s not cheap (expect to pay around $270 USD), but if you’ve never done it before, this is one of the most magical places in the world to try it.

💡 We recommend you book hot air ballooning in Sigiriya with Sri Lanka Balloon as they include accommodation pickup, a breakfast buffet, post-flight bottle of bubbly, flight certificate, insurance and more. Definitely one for the bucket list if your budget allows!

10. Take a Day Trip to Anuradhapura from Sigiriya

Just 1 hour and 40 minutes from Sigiriya, Anuradhapura is one of the most important religious and historical sites in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO-listed ancient city was the island’s first capital, dating back to 377 BC and is home to enormous white stupas, Buddhist temples that are centuries old and the famous Sri Maha Bodhi tree, said to be cut from the original Bodhi tree in India where Buddha attained enlightenment.

The ancient city of Anuradhapura covers over 40 square kilometres and is still an active pilgrimage site today. What stood out to us most was how alive it felt. We saw monks in saffron robes, families bringing offerings and the smell of incense floating through the air. Compared to Polonnaruwa, which feels more like an archaeological site, Anuradhapura is very much living and deeply sacred. It’s hard to describe, but the whole place just felt meaningful in a way that’s really stuck with us.

🚨 Our top tip: Hire a tuk-tuk driver. Walking or cycling around Anuradhapura is exhausting in the heat, and the ruins are spread out. We used a brilliant local driver named Gaga who made the day so fun. He even helped us get permission to fly our drone at a few temples. You can message him on WhatsApp at +94 71 647 2903 – just let him know Jack and Lauren sent you and he might give you a cheeky discount.

Should I visit Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa?

If we had to choose between Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, we’d pick Anuradhapura. It just feels more meaningful because of its spiritual atmosphere and scale.

11. Rent a Bike and Explore on your Terms

Sigiriya Rock might be a steep climb, but the area around the village is mostly flat so it’s perfect for hopping on a bike and just seeing where the road takes you. We saw rice paddies, lakes, little wood carving shops (which seem to be a thing here?), and friendly locals going about their day. It’s a relaxing way to explore Sigiriya and gives you the freedom to stop whenever something catches your eye.

We rented bikes one afternoon and loved how we got to see so much in such a short amount of time. It actually reminded us of a local village cycling tour we did in Ubud in Bali. Compared to hopping in a tuk-tuk or walking, we think this is one of the best things to do in Sigiriya to explore the village. You see way more than on foot and it’s a nice bit of additional exercise – which we needed after eating so much rice and curry!

You can rent bikes from Sigiriya TMS Tours (who you will find on Google Maps). I can’t remember the price (sorry!), but it was really affordable and you can rent by the hour or for a full day.

🎒 Prefer a guide? You can book a Sigiriya village cycle tour that includes bike rental, local expert guide and a traditional Sri Lankan lunch in a local home!

What We’d Skip in Sigiriya (and Why)

If you’re short on time, on a budget, or just want to prioritise the best of Sigiriya, here’s what we’d personally skip and what to do instead.

  • Ramya’s Home Cooking
It’s a lovely experience, but we were there for 2 hours and it’s not a traditional cooking class as you’re watching the food prep. Skip it if you’re after a hands-on experience, there are better cooking classes you can book nearby.
  • Polonnaruwa day trip
It’s worthwhile if you have time, but the ruins are spread out and less atmospheric than Anuradhapura. We’d say skip it if you can only pick one, we’d choose Anuradhapura for its more spiritual feel.
  • Lion Rock (if you’re on a budget)
It’s spectacular, but at $35, it’s one of the most expensive attractions in Sri Lanka. Skip it if you’re stretching your budget and do Pidurangala at sunrise and Mapagala at sunset instead, both offer epic views of Lion Rock itself.
  • Pidurangala Rock in bad weather
If it’s cloudy or rainy, don’t bother. There’s nothing at the top except a flat rock, the view is the only reason to go. Go for sunrise on a clear day or give it a miss.

Sigiriya One Day Itinerary: How to Spend 24 Hours in Sigiriya

We know what it’s like to be short on time when exploring Sri Lanka. But, we promise you can still tick off the best things to do in Sigiriya without feeling rushed! Here’s exactly how we’d recommend spending one day in Sigiriya based on our own trip:

  • 6am – Climb Pidurangala Rock for sunrise
Start your day with a sunrise hike up Pidurangala Rock. It takes around 30 – 40 minutes, but the view over Lion Rock and the misty jungle is absolutely worth it. This is one of the top sunrise spots in Sri Lanka.
  • 8am – Breakfast at your homestay
Most guesthouses and homestays in Sigiriya include breakfast. Head back to fuel up with fresh fruit and (most likely) Sri Lankan hoppers and a strong cup of tea/coffee before heading out again.
  • 9am – Visit Dambulla Cave Temple & Golden Buddha
Jump in a tuk-tuk and head to Dambulla, 30 mins away. You can visit the famous cave temples, the giant Golden Buddha, and if time allows, the temple on the lake.
  • 1pm – Lunch in Sigiriya Village
Head back to Sigiriya for lunch. We loved Cappuccino Bistro as it’s super calm and the food is really good, but there are plenty of options along the main road.
  • 2pm – Explore Sigiriya or take a Village Cycle Tour
If you’ve got energy, take a relaxing Sigiriya cycle tour through the village and farmland. It includes a guide and ends with a traditional village lunch so it’s perfect if you skipped lunch earlier. Or just take a tuk-tuk tour around Sigiriya to save your legs before the big climb.
  • 4pm – Climb Sigiriya Rock for Sunset
By this time, the sun is on its way down and it’s starting to cool a little. Setting off at 4pm will give you time to explore the entirety of Sigiriya fortress and have a couple of stops to rest along the way. You’ll reach the top just as the sun is starting to set. It’s one of the most iconic views in Sri Lanka and the best way to end your day.
  • 7pm – Dinner in Sigiriya
You’ll get down from Lion Rock just before dark. For dinner, head to Ramya’s Home Cooking for a unqiue local meal (you’ll need to book) or check out Rastaraunt or The Downtown Gastropub – they’re all great and we enjoyed the food and drink at all of them!

FAQs about Things to Do in Sigiriya

How much time do you need in Sigiriya?

To tick off the best things to do in Sigiriya, we’d recommend staying 2–4 days. If you’re doing 2 days, you can tick off some of the main Sigiriya attractions and Dambulla but if you add a day or two, you’ll be able to do all of the things on this list.

Also, if you don’t like moving around as much, we’d suggest basing yourself in Sigiriya to explore Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Anuradhapura. Some don’t mind moving every day or two but if you don’t want to, Sigiriya is a great base.

Is it better to go to Sigiriya Rock in the morning or afternoon?

We’d recommend climbing Sigiriya Rock in the late afternoon so you can be at the top to catch the sunset before descending. If you want to do something early in the morning, it’s best to hike to Pidurangala Rock at sunrise then spend the day exploring some of the other things to do in Sigiriya before climbing Sigiriya Rock for sunset.

Is Sigiriya Rock easy to climb?

If you’re fit and healthy, we’d describe it as moderately difficult to climb Sigiriya Rock. There are a total of 1200 steps – all of them are well-maintained and have handrails most of the way. Also, there are a few places to stop and take breaks so you can make it as easy or difficult as you like.

Does PickMe work in Sigiriya?

PickMe does not work in Sigiriya, as with many touristy and rural areas, local tuk-tuk drivers do not allow PickMe drivers to operate. So, you will need to negotiate with local drivers to get a fair price because some will try to make you spend a lot more than you need to. Do not be afraid to negotiate on the price, especially if it seems excessive.

Luckily, we rented a jeep in Sri Lanka, so we were able to avoid overpaying for tuk-tuks in Sigiriya.

Why is Sigiriya so famous?

Most people know Sigiriya for one thing, that epic rock rising out of the jungle. Sigiriya Rock Fortress (aka Lion Rock) is easily one of the most photographed places in Sri Lanka. It’s a 200 meter high rock rising out of the jungle, with the ruins of an ancient palace on top. It was built in the 5th century by a king who wanted his home to be untouchable (literally) and the scale of it feels pretty surreal when you’re stood up there.

We weren’t sure if it would live up to the hype, but after doing it ourselves, we totally get it. Sigiriya is famous because it’s unforgettable.
