Breakdown of the 5 Cinque Terre Towns

If you’re trying to plan an Italy itinerary, you have to include Cinque Terre. From the cliff-perched houses of Riomaggiore to Monterosso’s expansive beach, each town in Cinque Terre offers unique qualities. This Cinque Terre itinerary includes a visit to each one.

Here’s a breakdown of the Cinque Terre towns:

1. Riomaggiore:

As the southernmost village, Riomaggiore serves as the gateway to Cinque Terre if you’re arriving from southern destinations like La Spezia or Pisa. Here, you’ll find steep alleyways, Instagrammable spots, a small harbour, a bustling town, charming boutiques and seafood eateries.

🎒 Discover some of the best things to do in Riomaggiore

2. Manarola:

Manarola is our joint top pick for the best place to stay in Cinque Terre. Here, you’ll find cliff-jumping spots, coffee shops, incredible restaurants, and a beautiful harbour circled by a unique coastal path, Punta Bonfiglio, that offers breathtaking views of Manarola town and the Mediterranean Sea. Manarola is the town that offers some of the best things to do in Cinque Terre.

3. Vernazza:

Our other joint top choice for the best place to stay in Cinque Terre is the stunning Vernazza. It’s one of the smaller towns with amazing viewpoints and a natural harbour, which is an unmissable spot for a day sunbathing on the rocks with a pizza. There’s also a majestic castle towering above the harbour – Vernazza strikes the perfect balance between history and natural beauty.

4. Corniglia:

Unlike its siblings, Corniglia is perched atop a hill surrounded by beautiful vineyards and agricultural land. Theoretically, it is the only village without access to the water – although there is a long path leading down some steps to reach a hidden swimming and sunbathing spot. To get to Corniglia, you climb nearly 400 steps from the train station, but its elevated position gives unmatched views of the coastline and other towns, so it’s worth the climb!

5. Monterosso al Mare:

The largest of the five towns of Cinque Terre, Monterosso al Mare is a must-visit if you fancy a beach day with its generous sandy beach. This town also feels the most touristy, but aside from the beach, you will find a lengthy promenade and an entire town in Monterosso filled with boutique shops, gelato stalls and restaurants.

Day 1 in Cinque Terre: Riomaggiore & Manarola

Morning

Our itinerary for 3 days in Cinque Terre begins in Riomaggiore. If you’re staying in another town, hop on a train to get here.

The first thing to do in Riomaggiore town is wander and explore its winding streets. The main street running through the village is bustling with artisan boutiques and restaurants, with the distant call of the nearby sea and harbour. Admire the beautiful, colourful architecture and landscapes.

🎒 Alternatively, for your morning in Riomaggiore, you might love this (5 star) 3-hour cooking class where you learn to make two kinds of homemade pasta and an Italian dessert in the private home of a local cook.

Lunch

By midday, head to Kepris Pizzeria and grab a pizza to go. Or, if you’re a seafood lover, head to Tutti Fritti for an iconic Cinque Terre fishcone. Pizza or seafood in hand, head straight to the harbour.

The sight of vibrant homes of Riomaggoire harbour, almost tumbling into each other down a steep cliff, is the postcard-perfect picture that Cinque Terre has become known for.

Find a quiet spot on the rocks in the harbour and enjoy your pizza or seafood, taking in the views of the dramatic coastline and colourful buildings. The experience of eating Italian pizza on the rocks in Cinque Terre, with waves for company, is almost surreal.

Afternoon

With the sun still high, catch a train to Manarola, the next town along the coastline heading north. Once you arrive, grab a coffee at Da Artistide and stroll the pedestrian alleyways, taking in the beauty that envelopes this village.

Head along the coastal pathway on your right as you step foot in Manarola’s harbour. Walk along the path to the most iconic viewpoint in Manarola, the Punta Buonfiglio. Here, you are served with breathtaking panoramic views of the village surrounded by rolling hills and blue water. Take plenty of photos and selfies!

Next, we’re heading to a hidden gem in Cinque Terre: a secret swimming and cliff-jumping spot in Manarola. Continue along the coastal path, keep going go around the corner of the cliff and head towards the water. As you approach the end of the path, go down left to the rocks towards the sea, and you will find crystal clear water to swim and rocks to jump off.

Spend the afternoon swimming and sunbathing here, or at Manarola harbour, enjoying the Italian sun and incredibly good vibes of this quaint Cinque Terre village.

Top Tip: You can find directions to this hidden gem on this Instagram reel 🌊

Dinner

As the evening sets in, La Regina Manarola or Nessun Dorma steal the limelight in Manarola and dining at either one of these spots is one of the best things to do in Cinque Terre. With the sun setting and painting the horizon in fiery hues, head for dinner and enjoy great food and golden views over Manarola.

If you’re travelling to Cinque Terre on a budget but don’t want to compromise on the taste, Take Away Pasta at the top of Manarola (Via Antonio Discovolo, 136, 19017 Riomaggiore SP, Italy), is a fantastic place to grab a delicious and fresh pasta dish.

Day 2 in Cinque Terre: Vernazza & Corniglia

Morning

Welcome to day 2 of the complete Cinque Terre itinerary!

Board a morning train to Vernazza. As this beautiful town comes into view, prepare for a day of exploration.

First, wander along Via Roma, where you’ll find the typical architecture of Cinque Terre, with its colourful facades and shutters. Via Roma is Vernazza’s main street, lined with all sorts of unique shops and stores. Head behind Via Roma to discover winding, narrow alleyways, steep staircases and local houses, giving you a true taste of this town’s character.

Next, climb Castello Doria, a medieval castle about 70 meters high that offers an aerial perspective of the village and views of the shimmering sea below. Entrance to Doria Castello tower is 2 euros per person. The history of the castle, paired with the views, makes it a must-see on your list of things to do in Cinque Terre.

Before lunch, head up to the best viewpoint in Vernazza. Just a 10-minute steep ascent from the harbour on the Sentiero Monterosso – Vernazza trail, this spot rewards your short hike with a jaw-droppingly beautiful view of Vernazza, nestled against the expansive blue.

Lunch

By lunchtime, you’d have worked up quite an appetite. Head to Bar Gianni Franzi in Vernazza’s harbour. Watching the waves lapping at the shoreline of Vernazza’s small beach and the sun-kissed rocks make for a perfect midday dining spot.

Afternoon

Post-lunch, head to the train station and journey to Corniglia, the heart of the Cinque Terre National Park 100 meters above sea level. Carved amidst vineyards and farmlands, this village is the smallest of the Cinque Terre, and its somewhat unreachable nature adds to its allure.

Once you arrive at Corniglia train station, reaching the village demands a bit of effort, specifically a climb of nearly 400 steps known as the Lardarina! While the ascent might sound daunting, it’s worth it! Note: a shuttle bus also runs a few times a day. Here is the schedule.

Once in Corniglia, the town’s elevated position offers a unique panorama, and its compact size lends it an unmatched intimacy with its narrow streets, bustling restaurants and shops and historic churches.

Spend some time meandering the tight-knit pathways of Corniglia. Set Bar Terza Terra di Cadario Alison in your GPS for beautiful sea views from the terrace. Although it can be compact and occasionally crowded here, the view is amazing. Next, head to Er Posu Cafe’ di Tiziana Ielpo e Erika Cavicchi, one of the best bars in Corniglia (they also do incredible hot chocolates!).

Later, venture to Spiaggia di Corniglia, a true hidden gem in Cinque Terre. There are a lot of steps down to this swimming spot, but incredible viewpoints along the way of the sea, dramatic cliffs, and distant Monterosso. Relax at this slice of paradise away from the more crowded spots of Cinque Terre.

Evening

Make your way to Bar Pan e Vin, a traditional Italian spot. Watch the beautiful sunset before catching a train back to your base town.

Summary of Day 2 on our Cinque Terre Itinerary

  1. Morning: Vernazza town, Via Roma, Castello Doria and Vernazza viewpoint.
  2. Lunch: Bar Gianni Franzi.
  3. Afternoon: Corniglia narrow streets and historic churches, Bar Terra Terre do Cadario terrace, Spiaggia di Corniglia.
  4. Dinner: Bar Pan e Vin.

Day 3 in Cinque Terre: Monterosso

Morning

On our Cinque Terre itinerary for 3 days, set out early, avoiding the later crowds of tourists, and board the train to Monterosso, the northernmost village in Cinque Terre and first of the five.

Your first destination is Spiaggia Fegina Beach, also known as Monterosso Public Beach. This well-known and popular spot is arguably Cinque Terre’s most beautiful beach stretch dotted with the iconic orange and green umbrellas. You can rent an umbrella and chair or simply find a free spot and lay down your own towel. Chair and umbrella rentals on Monterosso’s beach range from 20-40 euros for two people, depending on the area/row you want and whether it’s for 1/2 a day or a full day.

As you leave the beach, don’t miss the photo opportunity from the promenade. The panoramic view of the beachfront, with its vibrant umbrellas and the blue sea, is a must-capture moment.

Next, venture into Monterosso town. Meander through the cobbled streets, taking in the blend of history and modernity. The vibrant storefronts have artisanal crafts and local produce if you fancy a bit of shopping.

Lunch

Head to San Martino Gastronomia, a highly-rated favourite among locals and visitors and easy on the budget.

Afternoon

Post-lunch, grab gelato from any of the numerous gelaterias on the seafront promenade.

As you stroll, head towards the 14th-century church of St John (Parrocchia di S. Giovanni Battista). Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, its unique black and white striped façade is a testament to the region’s rich architectural heritage and makes it a must on the list of things to do in Cinque Terre.

A detour to Via Zuecca Street is essential. This picturesque lane is one of the most Instagrammable places in Cinque Terre, with its pastel buildings and flower-draped balconies.

Dinner

As the sun begins its set, signalling the end of another beautiful day in Cinque Terre, head to Da Eraldo, a quaint little restaurant in the busy town, promising a lovely end to your 3-day Cinque Terre itinerary.

Evening

As evening blankets Monterosso, head on this unforgettable sunset boat tour, departing straight from Monterosso al Mare. It’s your golden ticket to see Cinque Terre’s charm from a different angle, minus the daytime hustle. On this tour, you sail past the dreamy landscapes up to Riomaggiore and Punta Montenero.

If you’re up for it, you can also take a swim in a quiet cove before being treated to a true Italian aperitivo on deck. It’s a pinch-me moment, with potential dolphin sightings adding an extra sprinkle of magic to your Monterosso twilight.

How to Get Around Cinque Terre

There are a few things to know before visiting Cinque Terre, and your Cinque Terre itinerary wouldn’t be complete without knowing how to navigate these charming villages.

Within the Villages

The Cinque Terre villages are ancient towns built long before cars, so inside each village, you explore exclusively on foot. There are no roads for cars, just quaint, narrow alleys and LOTS of steps, which adds to the magic of the place.

Top Tip: Start your exploring early! Especially in peak seasons, avoid the rush and ensure you can cover all the things to do in Cinque Terre by catching the earliest train or boat etc.

Getting to and from each Cinque Terre town

1. Train

  • Trains are the fastest and easiest way to travel between the Cinque Terre villages and this method of transport is perfect for this Cinque Terre itinerary – trains links all five villages and along the way, offer beautiful views!
  • The Cinque Terre train (no matter the distance) costs 5 euros in peak season and 2.50 euros in the off-season.
  • Purchase tickets at the station. Always remember to stamp them at the little machines before boarding.
  • Top Tip: If you’re hopping between villages, consider the Cinque Terre Train Card for unlimited rides in one day. Here is a more detailed guide for further information.

2. Walking

  • There are paths and trails between villages. They can be steep and take a while, but the views and experience make it absolutely worth it.
  • Some paths might be closed because of weather or repairs, so double-check.

3. Car

  • Renting a car in Cinque Terre is not the best idea. Roads between the villages are narrow and twisty. Plus, finding parking can be challenging.
  • If you choose to drive, you will park outside the main towns and then walk or take a train in.

4. Boat

  • There are regular boats running between the villages, except Corniglia. It’s a fun change from walking or training.
  • One of the most amazing things to do in Cinque Terre is take a sunset boat tour, as you will on day 3 of this Cinque Terre itinerary.
  • Boats don’t run as often as trains, and they don’t operate in bad weather. Always check the schedules.

5. Bus

  • The shuttle bus from Corniglia’s train station to the top of the village is an alternative to the 400 steps required to reach Corniglia town. Here is the schedule.

Join a cooking class in Cinque Terre – this pesto cooking class looks great, and on this one which is rated 5 stars you get to make two styles of homemade pasta and an Italian dessert in the private home of a local cook. You’ll get hands-on experience making local dishes with fresh ingredients. It’s a fun way to learn about the local food.

3. Day trip to Portofino

Just a stones throw (short ferry) from Cinque Terre is the beautiful Portofino, known for its luxury yachts, pastel houses, and high-end boutiques. Begin at the lively Piazza Martiri Dell’Olivetta, then visit Castello Brown for its amazing views.
