Where is Playa Negra?

You’ll find Playa Negra on the southern coast of Vieques, on the outskirts of Esperanza. It’s nestled away from the more frequented tourist spots, providing a serene escape that feels like a private piece of paradise.

It can get busy sometimes because the novelty of the pitch-black sand draws plenty of attention. However, if you turn right as you enter the beach, it gets quieter.

How to Get to Playa Negra

Getting there is part of the adventure. You’ll first need to reach Vieques—either by a quick flight from San Juan or by ferry from Ceiba on mainland Puerto Rico. Once in Vieques, you can rent a car or a golf cart and make your own way there. Alternatively, jump in a taxi to the trailhead that leads to Playa Negra.

Top Tip: Don’t leave it until the last minute to book a car rental in Vieques. We learned this the hard way after trying to reserve a car the day before we were due to visit and all car rental companies were sold out!

The trail from the road down to Playa Negra is easy, relatively short and well-marked, taking around 5-10 minutes to walk. The path is sandy but can get wet and muddy in places when it’s rained.

If you’re driving, go slightly past the trailhead (the trailhead is marked on Google Maps) and park on the right side of the road. There is a small parking area opposite Oro Gallery.

The sand at Playa Negra has a unique black hue because of the volcanic rock and sediments washed ashore. This geological wonder is a result of ancient tectonic plate and volcanic activity, that formed Vieques millions of years ago, leaving behind a rare type of black sand.

Activities at Playa Negra

Although Playa Negra is one of the best things to do in Vieques, it’s a secluded beach with no amenities. So, your activities are limited to swimming, sunbathing, walking on the sand, admiring the cliffs and looking out for the many crabs.

So, take a swim in the clear waters, enjoy a picnic, or just lay back and admire the stark contrast of the black sand against the blue sea and orange cliffs.

There are no facilities at Playa Negra, so plan accordingly. Bring sunscreen, water, snacks and bug spray for the trail.
