How to Get to Playa Colora, Puerto Rico
To get to Playa Colora, you’ll start your journey at Seven Seas Beach. Here, there’s a car park that costs $5 per vehicle.
Once you’ve reached the beach, walk along the path behind and adjacent to Seven Seas, until you reach the start of the trail between the trees. It’s a modest 20-minute trail to Playa Colora through a mangrove forest.
The 2-kilometre path to Playa Colora is a leisurely stroll, offering a tranquil experience amidst the mangrove. On your journey, you’ll encounter picturesque views of Seven Seas Beach and a fascinating mangrove full of wildlife. Eventually, you’ll notice the trail forks and you’ll spot a sign on your right indicating the way to Playa Colora – follow this trail to reach the beach.
Note: The trail may have sandy sections and slight elevation gains, so take your time, especially in the Puerto Rican heat. Wear comfortable footwear, preferably water shoes or sturdy sandals. Be mindful of roots along the trail to avoid tripping.

What You’ll Find at Playa Colora, Puerto Rico
Emerging from the trail, you’ll be rewarded by the breathtaking orange sand of Playa Colora, contrasting beautifully with the clear blue waters of the Caribbean. While the beach offers a couple of palm trees for shade, it’s predominantly sunny, so pack essentials like a beach umbrella, wide-brimmed hat, and sun protection clothing.

Beware of the Waves
Playa Colora is designated as a no-swimming beach by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) due to rough surf and rip tides. There are no lifeguards, so exercise caution and stay out of the water. Even when the sea appears calm, strong currents may lurk beneath the surface.
So, if you do brave a dip, you’re doing so at your own risk. When we visited, swimming was impossible, the current was strong and the waves large.
What to Bring to Playa Colora
As you prepare for your journey to Playa Colora, Puerto Rico, remember that there are no facilities at the beach! Here’s a checklist of items to ensure a comfortable and responsible visit:
Beach Umbrella: There’s only a small amount of natural shade on the beach, so a beach umbrella might be needed.
Water: Carry plenty of water and stay hydrated, especially on hot days.
Snacks: A small backpack with water and snacks is advisable for an extended stay.
Reusable Water Bottle: Help reduce rubbish by bringing a reusable water bottle.
Beach Blanket or Cooler: Consider packing a beach blanket or a small cooler for added convenience. Although, you might not want to carry a cooler on the hike.
Bug Spray: In the mangrove “forest” section of the trail, you might encounter mosquitoes, so bring bug spray and use it liberally.
Rubbish Bags: There are no bins at Playa Colora, so bring small bags to pack out your trash and any litter you may find.
Venture to Playa Escondida
We recommend exploring two hidden beaches in one trip. A little further along the trail, you’ll find Playa Escondida. This is a more expansive beach, but equally as secluded and beautiful!
Swimming here isn’t recommended either. However, the shallow waters make for the perfect place to cool off.
We were able to get in the water at Playa Escondida, even though Playa Colora was incredibly rough. Instead of swimming, we sat and paddled in the shallow waters. It’s also perfect for a relaxing stroll along the beach.
