The 7 Best Munduk Restaurants You Shouldn’t Miss

Tucked away in the mountains of North Bali, Munduk is a small village that is way quieter and more slow-paced than the busier parts of the island. Munduk is known for its stunning green landscapes, mountainous terrain, cascading waterfalls and being high up in the hills. Up here, you’re more likely to stumble upon cosy local warungs dishing out traditional Indonesian food than those upscale restaurants and trendy, boho cafes you find elsewhere in Bali. But don’t worry, that doesn’t mean you won’t find some incredible Munduk restaurants. We’ve gone ahead and picked out the best restaurants in Munduk, so you don’t have to waste hours searching through Google Maps like we did.

What to Expect from Munduk Restaurants

Most restaurants in Munduk, Bali, are positioned to face the mountains because the area is known for its awesome views of the unspoiled rolling mountains, valleys, lakes and rice fields. Munduk is located in Bali’s central highlands so many of the restaurants have taken advantage of their elevated positions to offer pretty unforgettable views as a backdrop to your meal. This certainly makes eating in Munduk an even more special experience. Most restaurants up here are locally-owned warungs, so make sure you try some traditional Balinese dishes.

The Best Munduk Restaurants

1. Eco Cafe 2

Perched on the edge of the valley, with beautiful mountain and valley views, Eco Cafe 2 is a must-visit Munduk restaurant run by a cooperative of farmers. What originally started as a project for local farmers to work together to produce Lawak coffee has grown into one of the best Munduk restaurants. 

Unsurprisingly, if you’re a coffee lover, then this is a great place to stop. However, we don’t drink coffee and still had a great time. All the food they produce is organic, with as many of the ingredients as possible locally sourced. We shared several plates because we wanted to try some Indonesian dishes we hadn’t sampled yet – we can highly recommend the babi rendang (pork rendang).

2. Warung Kadirasa

Almost next to Eco Cafe, you’ll find the next of our best Munduk restaurants, Warung Kadirasa. A warung in Bali is a family-owned establishment that serves traditional Indonesian cuisine, and there are plenty of them in this region, but Warung Kadirasa is definitely one of the best warungs in Munduk. We received such a warm welcome here, with the guys more than happy to explain the dishes to us and help us choose what they thought we should try. 

We came for an early dinner in the hope of seeing the sunset (the clouds had other plans), but it still had stunning views of the valley and rolling hills. A great thing about the menu here is many of the dishes come with a complimentary soup as an appetiser.

3. The View Munduk

The name kind of gives it away, but The View has a pretty sensational view above the rolling hills and across to the Java Sea. This place is a little outside Munduk centre – it’s about 10 minutes north and looks back down towards the village and way beyond. It’s so high that on an overcast day, you’ll be in the clouds.

We stopped here for lunch and were the only ones. You’ll find a choice of inside seating, a covered roof deck and a single wooden gazebo in the garden – we chose the gazebo. The view is to die for and feels like a super romantic setting. The staff are super friendly, the food is presented well and we had an all-around great experience – it’s definitely one of the best Munduk restaurants.

4. The Botanist

The Botanist is one of the few Munduk restaurants you would expect to find in the more well-travelled areas of Bali. The menu is definitely catered more to tourists with what appears to be very little Indonesian influence. In the villages of Northern Bali, you can quickly get bored of eating similar food, so The Botanist is a great respite from this. Perched on the side of a hill and nestled amongst the trees, you really do feel at one with nature at this place.

It’s a super chill atmosphere here and it’s an amazing spot during the day or at night. What’s cool about The Botanist is its farm-to-table. As you descend the steps from the parking lot to the restaurant, you’ll see some of their ingredients growing in the garden.

5. Ulekan Munduk 

Ulekan is probably the most upscale dining experience in Munduk. Everything on the menu is Indonesian cuisine, but as you’ve probably never experienced it before. Rather than the traditional homestyle cooking, Ulekan aims to bring the best of the best, taking inspiration from across Indonesia. Ok, it isn’t cheap for Bali standards, but we think the extra expense is 100% worth it. 

Of all the Munduk restaurants, this stands out as being one of the most unique as it isn’t a casual dining experience. It’s more formal, and we definitely felt a bit dressed down compared to other guests. 

NOTE: Ulekan has another restaurant in Berawa (near Canggu), so if you don’t get a chance to visit in Munduk you have another opportunity elsewhere.

🎒 If you want to combine delicious Indonesian food with Munduk’s waterfalls, this adventure to Banyu Wana and Sekumpul Waterfalls is a super fun and affordable option. Transport (including pick up and drop off) is included, as well as bonus trips to rice fields and Munduk’s twin lakes.

6. Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort

There is no other way to describe this place than – wow! 

You’ll find Munduk Moding Plantation and Resort within a working coffee plantation around 20 minutes outside the centre of Munduk. The resort is most famous for its beautiful infinity pool (probably one of the best infinity pools in Bali), which appears to float above the jungle, providing panoramic views that extend all the way to the coast – but the restaurant is worth the visit too!

The MiMPi Restaurant serves up a cool mix of Indonesian and international dishes, mostly made with organic and local ingredients. Yep, it’s a bit pricier than other places in Munduk, thanks to its spot in a luxury resort. But with such an awesome setting, we think it’s totally worth the extra money.

Top Tip: If you aren’t a hotel guest, the resort offers day passes, which allow access to its facilities including the stunning infinity pool.

7. Warung Heaven

Warung Heaven is another traditional family-owned and run warung. We had possibly the warmest welcome we had at any of the Munduk restaurants. Like many places in the area, everything is made fresh from scratch while you wait, and you can tell! We tried babi kecap and ayam kecap for the first time, and they were both delicious.

Also, you can take a traditional Balinese cooking class here too – and judging by the food, it would probably be amazing! We’d not long done a cooking class in Sidemen, so we didn’t do another in Munduk, but the reviews suggest it’s definitely worth it!

The Best Munduk Restaurants Roundup

There are probably many more amazing restaurants in Munduk that we didn’t get to try, but we’ve tried to give a balanced list of cheap but tasty warungs and more upscale, slightly pricier dining. Overall, you’ll find it a bit harder to find varying food options in Munduk – it’s a lot less travelled than other areas in Bali like Ubud. However, if you use this list of best Munduk restaurants and look hard enough, you’ll find some great service and tasty food in this tiny area of North Bali.
