The Best Caribbean Islands to Visit This Year (2025)

The Caribbean is a dream destination for many people. Who wouldn’t want to visit this part of the world with the promise of powdery white sand beaches, waters bluer than the sky on a perfect summer day, year-round sunshine and a laid-back island lifestyle you won’t find anywhere else? The only problem is, most people don’t realise how big this place is. The Caribbean is made up of over 30 countries or foreign territories and spans approximately 2.75 million square kilometres, including both the sea and around 239,681 square kilometres of land across its islands. So choosing the best Caribbean islands to visit can be a little tricky and overwhelming at first glance.

We’re here to help you decide your next vacation destination by selecting what we think are the top Caribbean islands to visit in 2025. In total, we’ve visited approximately 30 Caribbean islands, so we’ve got a bit of experience to share.

9 Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2025

1. Grenada

Grenada is toward the south of the Caribbean island chain, well-connected with affordable flights directly from the US, Canada, the UK and Europe, but remains one of the less-travelled countries in the Caribbean.

We spent around a month in Grenada, and we consider it to be in the top 3 places we’ve ever visited and definitely one of our favourite Caribbean islands. Why? Because it has a bit of everything. The beaches in Grenada are sensational, long stretches of pristine white sand (like the 5km long Grand Anse Beach), clear waters for snorkelling, beautiful mountains and rainforests, cascading waterfalls, cacao plantations, and so much more.

What’s so special about Grenada is it’s well-equipped for tourism, but it has completely retained its traditional Caribbean charm, and we found Grenadians to be the most welcoming people in the region.

🎒 What to Do in Grenada This Year

  • Sail along Grand Anse Beach on a sunset cruise with bubbly in hand
  • Join a food tour and sample some of Grenada’s best local dishes
  • Snorkel around the world’s first Underwater Sculpture Park
  • Through lush rainforest, hike to the amazing Seven Sisters Falls
  • Try your hand at making chocolate and sip on some local rum
  • Trek up Mount Qua Qua and keep an eye out for Mona Monkeys

2. Puerto Rico

After spending about three weeks doing a lap of Puerto Rico, we couldn’t be more confident adding it to this list of Caribbean islands to visit in 2025. This US territory is a fusion of cultures and cuisines, with historical cities, resorts, rainforests, deserted beaches, awesome surf spots and even an island occupied by wild horses. Yep, you read that right!

If you’re from the US, visiting Puerto Rico is super easy, and we guarantee you’ll have a vacation to remember – no matter the type of traveller you are.

What we love about Puerto Rico is its diversity. You get all the home comforts of food choices, good roads and shopping combined with the natural beauty and weather of a Caribbean island, with a splash of culture and history – it really does have everything.

  • Experience the super colourful San Juan on a walking food tour
  • Chill on hidden beaches like Playa Escondida, Playa Colora, and Playa Negra in Vieques
  • Go snorkelling in Culebra as the waters here are incredibly clear
  • Kayak through the glowing bioluminescent bay in Vieques
  • Surf in Rincon and enjoy the chilled out vibes of this cool surf town
  • Take a sunset sailing tour and soak in those ocean views
  • Hike through El Yunque National Forest and chase waterfalls (our fave!)

3. British Virgin Islands

Is there anything more idyllic than hopping aboard a yacht and cruising around tiny Caribbean islands, some uninhabited and some occupied by some of the wealthiest people in the world? We added the British Virgin Islands to our list of Caribbean islands to visit in 2025 because it has the best island hopping in the entire Caribbean chain, plus incredible snorkelling and diving if you’re into that.

The beaches in the BVI are some of the most jaw-dropping in the region, and while, during peak season, you’ll find quite a lot of tourists on the main islands of Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and Anegada, most of them are on boats or cruise ships, so the beaches themselves never feel too crowded.

Over the past few years, we’ve spent around 6 months in the BVI, and as you might guess by the amount of time we’ve spent there, we love it! We plan on returning for a period each year for the foreseeable future.

🎒 What to Do in the BVI This Year

  • Spend a day island hopping on a full day charter and explore different BVI hotspots
  • Paddle through the peaceful mangroves at Beef Island Lagoon
  • Visit hidden beaches and snorkel over colourful coral reefs
  • Hike the trails at Mount Healthy National Park for some epic views
  • Island hop to Virgin Gorda and snorkel in crystal-clear waters
  • Check out the BVI’s only pineapple farm
  • Stroll through the Botanical Gardens and Fahie Hill Murals

4. Dominica

Dominica is a nation for eco-travellers and nature lovers. It’s very much under the radar when people are searching for the best Caribbean islands to visit, but anyone we speak to who has been says it is their favourite island by far. Lush rainforests, incredible hikes, cascading waterfalls, and even a boiling lake – this place is like something out of a jungle story book.

Everything in Dominica has an eco-conscious element to it. The government of Dominica is a leading force in climate adaptation and has committed to becoming the first climate-resilient nation, and they aim to be powered 100% by natural renewable energy sources.

If you want to explore a side of the Caribbean most outsiders are yet to discover, then you have to be quick. Dominica is getting a lot of attention, and rightly so, which will likely result in cruise ships coming here soon enough. Also, they are currently working on building an international airport, which could be open as early as 2026, so 2025 would be the perfect time to visit.

🎒 What to Do in Dominica This Year

  • Spot whales and dolphins on a boat tour out at sea
  • Check out the volcanic black sand beaches and bubbling sulphur springs
  • Try canyoneering through lush rainforest gorges
  • Hike to the boiling lake and explore the eerie Valley of Desolation
  • Hunt down some of the Caribbean’s most stunning waterfalls
  • Join a local cooking class and master the art of Dominican cuisine

5. Antigua & Barbuda

How does a dual-island nation with 365 beaches sound? You’ll get to experience the pristine white sands of Antigua and the mystical pink sands of Barbuda – honestly, they’re some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve seen in the Caribbean.

As well as beaches, Antigua and Barbuda is renowned for its sailing events throughout the year and the incredible snorkelling and diving with plenty of flourishing reefs and dive sites close by too. Besides this, the country has much colonial history to explore, with places like Nelson’s Dockyard and Shirley Heights, being spots you can’t miss when you visit the island.

We loved exploring Antigua. We got the perfect combination of relaxation, deserted beaches, exploration (to places like the Pillars of Hercules) and immersion in local life. If you want a little bit of luxury while experiencing the real Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda definitely gives you that.

  5. Ride through the rainforest and along the beaches in a Tuk-Tuk!

6. Barbados

The most developed of the eastern Caribbean islands, Barbados is the perfect choice for first-time visitors to the Caribbean. Unlike many of the surrounding mountainous islands, Barbados is relatively flat and not volcanic, so you won’t find lush rainforests and waterfalls here, but you will get to experience its incredible beaches.

Although Barbados is more equipped for tourism, it still retains a quintessential Bajan charm and local atmosphere – you just have to search it out a little more. When compared with other islands, there is much more choice when it comes to restaurants and accommodation and where to stay; from all-inclusive resorts and hotels, to apartments and villas. So, if you want to experience the Caribbean, but with the luxuries of home, Barbados should be on your list of Caribbean islands to visit this year.

We’ve spent around 2 months in total in Barbados, and our top tip would be to rent a car (here’s our guide to ensure you have no issues) and get out of the tourist areas. The real Barbados isn’t inside a beach resort. Make sure you explore the rugged Atlantic coast, including Bathsheba – you won’t regret it!

🎒 What to Do in Barbados This Year

  • Snorkel with sea turtles around the shipwrecks
  • Eat at some of the most delicious restaurants
  • See the island your way with a private, customisable tour
  • Set sail on a catamaran excursion for a day of sunshine and sea breezes
  • Wander through the underground tunnels of Harrison’s Cave
  • Explore the wild beauty of Bathsheba Beach and hidden coastal spots
  • Sip on some of the island’s finest rum at Mount Gay Distillery

7. St Lucia

Some people think St Lucia is for couples and honeymooners, and fair enough, it is named as the top honeymoon destination for 2025. But there’s so much more to this island than romance. It’s an absolute dream if you love adventure too. The landscapes here are breathtaking (some of the best we’ve ever witnessed), particularly the Pitons, which are one of the best things to see in Soufriere. The beaches are a mixture of white, golden and black sand. The rainforests are lush, dense and tropical. And, the waterfalls are perfectly refreshing on a hot day.

Whether you want to relax in ultimate luxury, or you want to rent a car to adventure and explore, St Lucia will give you everything you’re looking for. We spent over a month on the island, based both in the north and the south, and were able to see almost the entire island. We can safely say we’d love to go back one day!

🎒 What to Do in St Lucia This Year

  1. Climb the famous Pitons if you’re up for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure
  2. Get hands-on with chocolate making at Project Chocolat (we recommend the Tree to Bar Experience!).
  3. Sunbathe on some of the best beaches in St Lucia
  4. Cruise along the west coast to Soufriere on a boat trip
  5. Soak in the Sulphur Springs mud baths at the world’s only drive-in volcano
  6. Sail around the island on a catamaran cruise
  7. Walk the Tet Paul Nature Trail (stunning Piton views without the intense hike!)

8. Bonaire

Bonaire is the least developed and smallest of the ABC islands. They sit outside of the hurricane belt and are part of the Dutch Caribbean. So, if you’re looking for the best Caribbean islands to visit in August, September or October, then you should definitely consider Bonaire.

This tiny island is globally famous as one of the best diving areas in the world. On Aruba and Curacao (the A and the C of the ABC islands), you’ll find resorts, casinos and large conglomerate businesses, and more crowds. You don’t get all of this on Bonaire. Instead, you get ultimate quiet and relaxation, which makes it perfect for people who want to spend most of their time diving and the rest of their time in peace and quiet.

🎒 What to Do in Bonaire This Year

  • Check out the striking pink salt flats and salt pyramids
  • Dive at Bonaire’s world-famous scuba sites
  • Relax on the island’s stunning white sand beaches
  • Cruise around Bonaire on a private catamaran for the ultimate day on the water
  • Kayak through the mangroves
  • Watch flamingos in their natural habitat
  • Try your luck with deep-sea fishing and reel in something big

9. St Vincent and the Grenadines

We’ve been lucky enough to spend over a year (across a handful of trips) in St Vincent and the Grenadines. For us, this is the true Caribbean. One of the very few places to be untouched by mass tourism, it’s possibly the last place you’ll find paradise beaches without a single soul on them.

The mainland, St Vincent, is volcanic and rugged, and has some of the most impressive rainforest landscapes stretching across the whole island – it’s practically untouched by tourism. Well, until Sandals St Vincent opened as the first resort hotel on the island.

Away from the mainland, you have a cluster of tiny islands (the Grenadines), including Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island. It’s great for cruising and hopping from island to island if you’re a sailor, and it’s also the most idyllic destination to disconnect from the world in boutique hotels, apartments and villas. There’s little development here, but the people are welcoming and the charm of this country is undeniable.

We already planned to add St Vincent and the Grenadines to our list of Caribbean islands to visit in 2025 anyway, but the people of SVG need tourism now more than ever. On July 3rd 2024, hurricane Beryl (a category 5 hurricane) made landfall on Union Island (the most southern island of the Grenadines). Union Island, Canouan and Mayreau faced complete destruction and effects were felt across the rest of the country too. People here need tourism to get back on their feet and rebuild, so please consider visiting SVG in 2025. We have been back in the country since Beryl and can confirm Bequia and St Vincent are as beautiful and ready for visitors as ever!

🎒 What to Do in St Vincent and the Grenadines This Year

  • Chase waterfalls and uncover pirate history on the mainland, St Vincent
  • Kick back on Bequia’s stunning beaches
  • Paddle a clear kayak over to Fort Duvernette for awesome coastal views
  • Go island hopping and visit the Tobago Cays (you can check out our guide here on how to island hop, but please note some companies and ferries may still be non-operational after Hurricane Beryl)
  • Trek up La Soufrière volcano for an unforgettable adventure
  • Climb Ma Peggy in Bequia or take it easy with a rum punch at Jack’s Beach Bar

FAQs about visiting the Caribbean

When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?

The best time to visit the Caribbean is during the two shoulder seasons (November or April/May). At these times, the large tourist crowds and huge number of cruise ship passengers aren’t around, but everything is still in full swing with all resorts, restaurants, bars and attractions still open. The water temperatures are warm but still refreshing, the trade winds aren’t too strong, and the temperatures aren’t excruciatingly hot (like the summer months can be).

With it being shoulder season, you’ll often bag some good deals on flights and accommodation too.

Check our guides to the best islands to visit each month

josiah bay tortola caribbean islands to visit this year

When is hurricane season in the Caribbean?

Officially, hurricane season runs from June 1st – November 30th. But, the highest chance of experiencing a hurricane is usually between mid-August to early October.

However, you shouldn’t let hurricane season put you off travelling to the Caribbean. The region is large and the chances of being directly impacted are low. However, it’s always best to plan ahead and prepare with travel insurance.

Also, if you do want to visit the Caribbean during August, September, or October, we recommend heading to the southern part of the island chain, particularly the ABC islands or Grenada.
